2017-2018 Tryout Information

Players, Parents and Friends of Capital,

The Capital Lacrosse Club (CLC) Tryout and Team Formation Policy has been updated effective August 1, 2017. The policy was developed by a committee consisting of parent board members, CLC staff members, and our coaches. The policy was unanimously approved on April 19, 2017 by the CLC Board of Directors.  The purpose of the policy is to:

  • Enhance the success of our teams and players.
  • Promote greater competition and player development.
  • Implement measures to ensure all players are evaluated upon their individual merits.

  • All players are subject to the open tryout each year in August.
  • Initial selection to the CLC freshman class will be performed using a blind tryout method.  Following day one of the freshman tryout, a preliminary cut will be made, and the top players will be invited back to day two for final selection.
  • Selection to the CLC Sophomore and Junior class will be based upon an annual tryout as well as prior performance, and subjective considerations by the coaches and Dir. of Lacrosse.
  • Fall team placement (Blue and Orange) will take place following one to two team formation practices (by approximately September 15, 2017)
  • Decisions regarding player placement will be made by CLC team coaches and the Dir. of Lacrosse.
  • Sophomore and Junior players in good standing are not automatically retained, but will be given the benefit of the doubt in cases of close evaluation.
  • Player placement on Blue and Orange teams will be reassessed each year during the first two weeks of summer practices, and players may be reassigned by the Dir. of Lacrosse.
  • Target roster size is 20 – 21
  • This policy is effective beginning with the 2017/2018 season

Changes to Note:

  • Open tryouts for all classes will mean that all returning players will not be guaranteed a roster slot following tryouts, but will have the benefit of the doubt in close evaluations.
  • Reassessments will happen prior to the summer season each year, with the possibility of movement between Orange and Blue teams, beginning in summer 2018.
  • Freshman roster cuts will happen over two days instead of one.  Typically, CLC has 90-100 players tryout for a freshman class.  We envision making a first cut down to 50-60 players and then a final cut down to 40-42 players.  This will take place over two consecutive days and be fully blind throughout.

The full policy is available on the CLC website <LINK>. The Board has invested considerable time and deliberation in establishing this policy to assure that all players are given a fair opportunity to compete at the highest level. We constantly strive to attract the very best athletes and teammates from the entire DC, MD, VA region to be members of the Club. Any questions regarding this policy can be directed to the Executive Director, Director of Lacrosse or President.

Thank you,

Dave Barber
